1989 240 Troubles ..... 200 1989

I bought a 1989 240 gl. I haven't taken possession yet (will tomorrow). THe previous owner states that the fan motor was replaced and then the trouble started with the electronics.

Here is a brief clip of the email:
"Windshield wipers do not work. Backup lights do not work but brake lights, blinkers and flashers are fine. New battery, but has to be jumped off to start, so something is not allowing the battery to charge. My mom drove it for a couple of months like this. Odometer, gas guage, etc., do not work. Fuses appear to be fine (as far as I know). No more than 500 miles were put on this car since.

Air conditioner needs new compressor. Heater works fine with new motor. Left rear tail light cover is broken but still works. There are only minor dings on the car. The clear coat on the car is turning lighter because it has not been garaged. Hood paint appears to be fading a bit.

Engine and transmission are great. No fluid leaks and oil has always been changed every 3-4000 miles.
Tires are good and has a full size spare that has been used one time. Has power windows, all work except the passenger front. Leather interior has one seam ripped on driver's seat and a few other signs of wear. The glove compartment cover is gone. The sun roof operates fine. It is a hand crank style."

Any idea why the charging system went out by replacing the fan motor? Coincidence? Pinched wiring?

As usual, any and all ideas, will be welcomed!!!

Randy
