A.C. planning ahead 200 1989

So, the A.C. seems to be working in the ol 89 245 now that the blower motor was done. It's a California car that has probably had air conditioning up until the day the motor stopped. Now, i'm wondering what's next for that. How does one go about testing and refilling the refrigerant?. Is some kind of conversion kit necessary? Or, is the best method taking it to the dealer/shop for a refill?...
