hello volvo sages- as a newbie to the forum, i am extremely impressed and helped by your generous answers to my recent questions. the only other forum ive seen this good is the slantsix forum. bet this question has never been asked. in the 92 240 im buying, the trans shifts smoothly through the 5 speeds and reverse. according to the diagram in haynes the gearshift mechanism looks rather complicated. has anyone taken it apart and are wearing parts generally available for less than a fortune. here is my basic question: the shift knob has a snap on disk where the shift pattern is printed. the disk comes off- snaps must be worn out. inside is a removable metal chunk weight. not sure of its function. guessing if it is lost, shifting into a gear, probably reverse wont work. solution to me seems to carefully reglue the disk to its groove on the top of the knob. concerned this may be wrong thing to do if future repair requires removal of the disk. im used to floorshifts with side shifter rods like on a rwd slantsix, gm or ford. this volvo m47 trans is a top shifter like american cars from the 30s. need a solution so the disk doesnt pop off and disappear with the weight. also is disassembling the shifter mechanism which i surmise would be necessary when you remove the trans to replace the clutch, one hellacious job? thanks tons, you sages are swell. oldduke
