Riddle me this! Coil Question 120-130

It was -15* this morning, and my 122 wouldn't start. I noticed that when I pulled the coil wire off the coil and held it away from the coil, the car would fire a little better then when the wire was on the coil.

Any body know why the car would fire better?

BTW-I was playing with the stock coil (very weak spark) and with a newer coil (very strong spark). I did get the car started (4* now) with the newer coil, and playing around with the coil wire.
