Speedo Ground in driver foot compartment? 900

After removing the connector to the sending unit, I found bare wires that I cleaned and wrapped with electrical tape. That did nothing, so I next tried the suggestion in FAQ and used "extension" wires to try and get a reading by quickly shorting them together. Nothing. Is the drivers foot compartment found on the right or left to locate the grounding bar? Any description would be appreciated.
Just checking before I tear into the dash. Thanks.
