Air Box Theory 200

I have a question about the air box that holds the air filter. I took the advice given here and removed the heater from the manifold and the hose to the air filter box from the manifold. I then capped the hole where the hose goes into the air box. I left the spring "guts" inside.

Today I removed the spring and flap and reassembled the air box.

When it is cold does the spring assembly open to allow the heated air in or does it close off the cold air from the front of the car?

By capping the hot air intake hole without removing the spring was I starving my engine for air when it is cold outside??

Thanks,
Hawkeye
