Going into reverse, Manual Tranny 700

Sometimes, the reverse on my '87 745 is grinding when trying to get it in gear... Most of the time, and at all times the forward gears are very smooth and easy but in something like 25% of the times that I have the problem. I don't know the condition of the clutch but there are no other signs of transmission troubles. Any ideas? I just hate the grinding and having to baby it lest I cause some damage.
