what kind of shocks do i need? 700 1990

hello im new here and i have a 1990 volvo 760 turbo wagon. i was told that these models have self leveling rear shocks with nivomat. the nivomats are range anywhere from 300 to 400 us dollars. can i replace with non nivomat shock? and if so what kind are the best to get gas-pressured etc..
