My 1979 Volvo 244 (manual steering) must have a Cam type steering rack as it matches a diagram of the Cam type housing in the Haynes book, but the boots have narrow outlets (about half inch)that fit on the tie rod so boots confusingly appear as ZF type. So it is not accurate to determine rack type from a boot as there are variants out there. In particular it appears that one (not both) of the Cam type boots is interchangeable with a ZF boot which confuses dealers and owners!

When I purchased a boot from a Volvo dealer it came in the Blue Box with a tube of special Volvo grease ("Genuine Grease for Constant Velocity Joints (MoS2)) to smear on the rack. The boot fits OK but does it matter if I use grease instead of oil? Don't want to excessively wear rack as Haynes book says Cam rack lubricated by oil-filled boot and ZF rack lubricated by grease. Alternatively, maybe Volvo Engineering Department did an upgrade/retrofit to spare parts and changed oil for grease?
