identifying tie rods? 900

I posted about this yesterday at the end of another thread but I think it is a topic of its own.

yesterday I finally replaced the struts and tie rod ends, but ran into a problem with the inner tie rods. I thought that I had a Koyo rack, and ordered parts accordingly. The new parts did not look like the old ones--the old had no wrench flats, and were secured with a peen, whereas the new did have wrench flats, and there was no smaller diameter surface before the threads that you could even put a peen. I suspect they are not the right tie rods.

So my question is, how do I tell which type I have when they don't match the code on the car.
