I have been working with Rhys off-line on my earlier post on a HIF6 switch over from HS6. The HS6 had worn shafts. Might have been better to have them rebuilt. I kind of messed one up with a ream I think.
The '68 144 B18B came to me never really having good power. Paperwork indicates some type of engine rebuild in the past. Compression appears good. Valves are adjusted. New plugs. Different fuel pump. Removing the secondary butterflies seemed to wake it up. I had idle issues and traced it to the worn shafts.
I decided to switch to HIF6. I saw repair work on my manifold near mixing chamber. I fold another combo manifold with secondaries. I left them in for now. New manifold gasket and studs. Manifold appears to be on ok. Can not get it to start without a lot of cranking. When I do get it running it can idle but jumps all over the place on tuning carbs. I preset jets per Rhys. I disconnected the vacumn line to brake booster and PCV. Seemed help but then no. Left it plugged at manifold. Got yet another combo manifold without secondaries at all. Very nice manifold. No help.
Working with Rhys. I pulled the carb and verified jet to needle size. There was fuel in the chamber. I check float height and drop. Put carb back on. Same. I dribble a bit of fuel into the carbs. It fires on first crank and stops. I cranked the engine with hand over the carbs. I'm not seeing a lot of vacumn. We discuss checking vavle timing at this point. It sure seems like some big vacumn issue. Not sure where to take this next so I thought I would post.
