I have been reading about use of a hose to listen for exhaust system leaks.

I tried a section of garden hose but all I hear is the hiss of when I touch the hose to the pipe. If I'm not touching the exhaust system what am I supposed to be hearing for?

What am I missing?

Should I be using a section of flex copper pipe? That's not a "hose" in my book.
