windshield washer affects speedometer ??? 200 1987

Hi fellow brickers,

I have an '87 240 wagon, and when I use the windshield washers, my speedo drops to zero! I'm almost certain that's not supposed to happen. Searched the forum but didn't see this particular ailment, so I'm wondering if anyone has ever seen and (hopefully) fixed this.

The wiper stalk works fine, On/Off/Fast/Intermittent all OK. When I pull towards me, the washers spray fluid, and the speedo drops to zero. Release the lever, washers stop and speedo resumes normal function. Any ideas where to start looking?
