Hi Board people,
I've done the prerequisite FAQ's and searches but haven't found a similar problem.
Have a 90 240 (AW70) with 198K. Just bought the car and noticed a week later that when I put it in drive and give it gas it will race a bit before actually engaging and moving forward. I would characterize this as a slip. No other gears have any problems and the symptoms are intermittent. Every couple of days it will do it.
Yes I have already flushed the fluid and replaced the filter. The fluid level is correct.
When I pulled the pan the fluid was clean and pink. No burnt smell. No black stuff in the pan.
I'm thinking the torque converter might be going out. Weird that the problem only shows up in first gear.
I think I've done everything I can do to rectify the situation except...
I'm wondering if a trans additive to prevent slipping might help before I get a used trans from the junk yard.
Anyone had experience with additives and can suggest a brand? Or is it a useless endeavor?
Thanks, Tony
