Are rubber seals in fuel pump hot wire/ground wire needed?? 700 1989

Of course the fuel pump goes out 400 miles from home...tapped on it with a wrench and she lasted long enough to get within 3 miles of a friend's house.Got towed. Swapped it out with the spare Bosch fuel pump that ALL 240/740 Bricksters carry in the trunk. However the connectors that supply the current were pretty rotten and I was only able to find a good one with the correct rubber seal for the hot wire...I just plugged in the ground wire and pushed in the plastic cover.
If I drive in the rain, will water affect the fuel pump? How about driving through standing water that submerges the fuel pump...I've done it with my daughter's 740 (1992) and made it across.
Should I rewire the ground wire with one that has the correct rubber plug?
Thanks for any ideas,
