Addendum to fuel gauge work around I posted over a year ago 900

I am one of many who have wrestled with speedometer/odometer problems in the 1991/92 7/940 cars.

The 1993/94 clusters will swap into the 91/92 cars but the fuel gauge does not work.

I exchanged some emails with Karl Nitz concerning his reworking of the circuit boards on the 93/94 clusters with the result being a correct registering fuel gauge. I included that information in a post here: http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1382761/740/760/780/making_9395_instrument_clusters_work_9192_79_series_refuel_gauge_procedureimages.html

Last fall I purchased a 1992 745. It's problem list included a non working speedometer and odometer. I had a 1993 960 cluster from the pick and pull. About a month ago I performed Karl's fuel gauge work around on that cluster. It involved the severing of two traces, installing two jumpers, and transferring the the capacitor from the 92 circuit.

When I installed the cluster in the 92 the fuel gauge registered full all the time. I emailed Karl and included a description of the work I had done as well as an image. He verified the procedure duplicated his effort.

I wondered if perhaps the fact that the cluster was from a 960 made a difference. I picked up a cluster from a 94 944 and performed the procedure on it. The results were the same- the fuel gauge reads full all the time.

I used the same capacitor on both work arounds- transferring it from the original board to the 1993 960 board and then to the 1994 940 boards. Perhaps when I have the opportunity I will try a different capacitor.

Until that time I thought it would be prudent to pass this information along. I wish I could say that I had a positive outcome but that is not the case.

Without a working fuel gauge I at least can use the working speedometer/odometer and keep track of the miles on a tank of fuel. I use a marker to record the fill up mileage on the upper corner of the windshield- telling my friends it is my continuing research on my personal time travel theory.

If I am able to come up with a solution you can be sure I will be back to share it.

Randy
