In reference to an inquiry from yesterday:

At top dead center the cam timing marks lined up but the crank and intermediate
shaft marks were way off and the rotor was pointing to the #2 position on distributor. I removed the tensioner, lined up the marks, re-positioned the belt, re-installed the belt and it fired up right away. The belt seemed to have a bit of slop to it but I was able to loosen the tensioner and tighten the belt a bit more. It was fine driving around the block but it seems like the tensioner and belt should be replaced. This is the second time in a year and a half that this has happened. The first time was after I had cam seal replaced and I don't remember the mechanic re-tensioning the belt. I suspect that the last mechanic that got it running did exactly what I did to get it running again. He was vague in exactly what he did to get it going. I'd like to tackle replacing the belt and have read the archive and search about the rope trick but I'm still a little confused about removing the pulley. Once the pulley bolt is off does the pulley just pull off? Any tips or guidance is appreciated. My instinct on this has been correct the entire way but I made an error in judgement by listening to my ex mechanic.
