Increasing MPG- replace Transmission or Rear Differential??? 700 1986

My 86 (and wife's 89)740 has an RPM range at 65 MPH of 2700+. However my son's 93 245 has an RPM of 2100 at the same speed. Needless to say, his MPG is about 31 on the highway and mine is a lot lower.
I would like to match the lower RPM's of the 93 with my 86. Should I look for a 93 AW transmission from a 240 and swap it out, or would I do better if I can get a rearend with a higher gear ratio??
Which is the most critical component??
Thanks,
El Raidman
