broken timing belt cover / new timing belt 200 1989

Finally got this car running (all it was was bent contacts in the ignition amplifier). Previous owner replaced the timing belt, but didn't replace the broken timing belt cover. The back part of the cover is split across, and the upper part is completely off. I tried to put the upper part of the cover back on, but can't seem to get it.

How important is it to replace the back part of the cover (will the front hold it together if I get it back on there?), or will I even be able to get the top part back on without taking a bunch of other parts off the engine? -- and which parts do I have to take off?

Darnit! Once we figured out why it didn't run, I was lookin' at smooth sailing! Everything else works, and it seems to be a great car.

Oh, and now, reading through these posts, I'm worrying that maybe they didn't replace whatever other parts they should have while they had the timing belt out... Can't ask them, 'cause it sat for several years after they changed the timing belt, and they don't remember.

thanks
Joy
