Sticky gauge or sticky thermostat? 700 1987

Hi folks,

It's been a while since I posted last! My energy has been in my classwork and my Chevy truck lately, and the Volvo needs some attention now.

I have a temp gauge hooked to my block drain port, so I can see the block temp as well as the in-dash head temp. It seemed to be stuck for a good long while, and then I saw the head temp rise just a little more than normal (could have been an optical illusion, the variance was so slight). Next thing I know, the block-mounted gauge popped straight to around 180 and all was ok.

I figure this is a gauge, not the t-stat. A stuck thermostat would overheat the engine significantly, right? In short order, too?

Thanks!

Ari
