Fuel pum replacement 900 1995

This is an extension of my question regarding “fuel pump rely” 4/18/11 that read; “Can anyone point me to the location of the fuel pump relay on my 1995 940 (Bosch coil)?
The (well-maintained w/ 160k miles) car was taken on a 300 mile round trip (150 miles then sat for a week then the return 150 mile trip)and ran and started great throughout. The following morning after the car sat all night my wife went to start it and it started and ran for less than a second and stalled and then would not start (it turns over normally) again. If it sits for a period (overnight) it will again start and run for a second or less and stalls, and then it just turns over and won’t start at all. I am hoping it is the fuel pump relay and not one of the fuel pumps. I’m just not sure if the relay is behind the ashtray, because I can’t seem to locate it under the hood.”
Thanks for all your input ----

4/26/11 - I put this project to back of my mind once I determined the relays were in working order…
First some pertinent information – the last Volvo pump replacement I did was in a 198? 240…never did one on a 700 or 900…This car (95 940 non-turbo 160+Kmiles - & she’s a beauty) is garaged (heated) during the winter, fuel stabilizer is added and the vehicle is occasionally started throughout the season.

It will still start and run for a second or so on initial try then stall and won’t start again until it sits for a period of time (overnight)… No problems AT ALL running/driving/starting before the post 150 mile trip morning non-start. The in-tank pump (no external pump) can be heard from the filler cap area (“whirring” for lack of terminology) while attempting to start it. I’m sure you can understand I don’t want to go through the cost and time of changing the pump only to find it may be another problem. My plan is to purchase a replacement Bosh that needs no modification to install. I’m told this can only be done if the present pump is original…. Also, am I way off base pondering the possibility of a clogged in-line fuel filter (wishful thinking)that was replaced two years ago (approx. 20K miles ago)?...

Thank you again for your time and consideration.
