1990 740, buy or run? 700 1990

Hello all... I have the chance to get a clean 1990 Volvo 740 GLE with the 16 valve engine for $800. The only problem with the car is that the transmission doesn't go into reverse.

The seller said that it DOES drive perfectly fine in forward, but it won't even recognize reverse. Would this be as simple as a range switch or a gummed up valve body, or are we talking a total catastrophe waiting to happen? Hopefully someone can answer soon, I plan to go look at it tonight at 7.
