Hi Folks,
I have noise coming from my valves and am wondering if it is time for a head rebuild.
There is valve clatter at higher rpm's under load. A little noisey at idle.
The engine is a 1991 B230F with about 195k miles. I was running a Enem V15 camshaft and it suddenly started to clatter terribly about a month ago. I believe that camshaft had worn down. Have since swapped it out for an "A" cam and set the shims with new rubber hushers. This reduced the clatter a lot but it is still there under acceleration over 2500 rpm. My thinking is some valves, guides or springs may have worn out and are making the clatter.
The car still drives fine with OK power just makes noise.
Compression seems OK.
I don't think it is piston slap but if somebody can describe the difference between slap and valve clatter I'd love to hear it.
I have a spare head ready to send off for machine work but am trying to confirm the noise is head and not block related before I start the swap.
Thanks,
Bert
