Kickdown Cable Caput 200 1993

The other day my wife noticed that while driving the '93 244 with auto trans it was taking longer to shift into the next gear - higher RPMs before the shift. The car wasn't driven for a couple days and then yesterday we took it on the freeway for a day trip - she didn't mention anything until after we were on our way. I noticed that as the trip wore on it was shifting at very high RPM (I have a tach installed) - 3200 from 1st to 2nd, 3500 from 2nd to 3rd and almost 4000 to get it into 4th. Checked the fluid level and it seemed fine, and while doing so didn't even notice the 2-3 inches of slack in the kickdown cable, duh.

There is a lot of slack in the kickdown cable. I read through some posts here, and tried spraying some lube/penetrant into the cable sheath in order to try to feed the cable back down. No luck, it's not budging at all. I can't imagine that corrosion would be the cause because the car was garage kept in a dry climate, and given that there's no budging it, I fear it is frayed or such. I'm obviously going to have to replace it, but is there anything else I can try in order to feed the cable back into position until a new cable arrives? It'll probably take a few days to get here, and it's annoying, if not dangerous driving it like this.
