240 wagon lift gate strut replacement 200 1991

Hello,

I am having trouble replacing the lift gate struts on my 1991 240 wagon.

The new struts are threaded on one end. This suggests that the old strut can be unscrewed from the brass ball/socket assembly holding the strut to the car. I cannot seem to get it unscrewed. Do I need some kind of super vice grip? Is there a better way to do this?
