Intermediate shaft question/ timing belt question 200

Hi all,

I have a 1989 245 N/A auto that is running pretty rich. If there is a code for running rich, or excessively rich, I have it. I am also getting fuel in the plastic intake track running from the air sensor to the throttle body. I thought the FPR would be the only way that would happen, but it is new and there is no fuel in the line from the FPR to the intake. I talked to someone on the phone, and they suggested there may be something wrong with the timing either via bad timing belt install or ignition. I did the timing belt and did notice the intermediate shaft mark is off, but the others are good. It was that way when I tore into it, and so I put it back that way. I assumed the intermediate shaft was only for the distributor, and where the marks line up is of no real consern, it just drives the distributor. Am I wrong in that assumption? If I get the intermediate shaft mark lined up, and the ignition timing back to good again, would that solve anything?
