740 Wagon Antenna Mast 700

I purchased a new antenna mast for our 745T wagon. I cannot figure out how to install it. I think the entire antenna assembly has to come out of the car to do it right. The instructions say to just pull the old mast out and install the replacement while the mechanism is in the car. It's not that easy. Is there a trick to this?

I would think as a minimum I have to remove the c-pillar trim and then remove the antenna and replace the mast and drive teeth on the bench. How does the antenna come out? Is there a FAQ? It's not like a sedan - those ARE easy.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
