Exhaust Work; Any tips? 200

A leak has developed in the top seam of the catalytic converter in my '87, so I have to remove that section of the system. No problem detaching the head pipe fitting, but I'm wondering how you all dealt with the other end of the cat pipe that slides into the intermediate pipe? I'd like to get the cat section out without damaging the rest of the pipes, if at all possible. Any helpful hints or tips would be great!
