Erratic Speedometer 700 1991

I have a 1991 745 with a wild and crazy speedometer. It fluctuates wildly especially a highway speed. Curiously the odometer works just fine. I'm not thinking that this is something I'd try to fix myself, but I'm wondering just how easily fixable it is - even for an experienced auto electric person. And is it possible that it's actually to sensor that's the root of the problem.
