My friend's non-volvo manual transmission won't disengage the clutch... where to start?

So, this is about my friend's ..2003? Trans Am.

He was playing around doing burnouts in an empty parking lot and did some in reverse. The car drove off the lot just fine and he was playing around in the streets. I know doing anything in reverse except gently backing up can break rear ends and possibly do bad things (no idea what bad things) to a transmission's internals, but I don't *think* that's the cause here.

A short distance later, he went to shift 2-3 and found out he couldn't get it into any gear.

It's a hydraulic clutch. Sounds to me like when the slave cylinder died on my parents' 88 ford ranger. Clutch pedal on the floor doesn't disengage the clutch. He said he's bought a clutch kit and wants to replace the clutch plate and possibly the slave cylinder if it looks leaky.

He's also ordered a ton of suspension parts and whatnot and gotten some shop access to work on it (very exciting to have a good place to work and not in grass I'm allergic to).

So... I guess I'm looking for a troubleshooting guide for a manual trans with a hydraulic clutch. Anyone have a good resource to share?

Thanks and happy bricking
