1970 P1800E Mag Wheels - Should They Be Used. 1800

Hi all,

I have the original mag wheels that came on my 1970 p1800. A little difficult to describe, but they are black with silver striping and a centre apex with a "V".

I understand that these mags can fail – because of rust between the alloy center core and a steel outer rim. A dangerous situation.

After removing the tires from the rims I noticed that there are are rivets that hold that center core to the outer rim. It is difficult to see whether these rivets are rusted.

I did notice that some of the rivet ends (not the head, the other end that shows on the outer side of the mag) had rust on them. I wire brushed this off - so it is surface rust...but what do I know?

The tires were holding air fine - so no leaks through the rivet points if that says anything...

I suppose I should take them to a tire shop to get an opinion, but given that you can't see the condition of the rivet, then I assume they won't be able to say much.

I would like to keep these unique rims, but what are the tell-tale signs of a dangerous mag wheel? The other option, for piece of mind, is to have the rivets replaced (if that is possible).

Thanks all.
