Late last week I dumped nearly $50 worth of gas into Bleen and hit the trip meter reset button. All was well until a mile later I realized the odometer wasn't advancing and the trip meter was still at zero. So much for the "myth" that hitting the trip meter button while moving breaks the gear... the car was sitting still when I hit the button.
Note that a 92/93 24x uses a 26 tooth gear, not the 25 tooth of the previous years. In my case, the 26 tooth gear blew a tooth and the rest of them were ready to rot off as a slight touch caused others to disintegrate.
Now for the annoying surprise, I removed and replaced the broken gear, reassembled the cluster and hit the trip meter button for good measure. Guess what, the dang button broke! I have had many of these reset buttons break over the years, so if you have a reason to tear the instrument cluster apart, I'd recommend getting a replacement reset button and install it during the process.
I hate doing a job twice!
