Hi All,
recently i had a small windfall of $ and decided to speed up some overdue maintenance on my '91 245. Spring had arrived and I got two new all-season tires and inner and outer ball joints (scantech) fitted. I was looking forward to a tight quiet ride and better steering feel.
I have this now, but I also have a loud "boing" noise at low speed on full lock emanating from the front right wheel. As far as I can tell it seems to be the spring/strut assembly hitting the strut tower. (the alignment was way out before).
Do I have the diagnosis right? IF so what is the cure? Can the strut towers sag? Is this something cured by braces like on the old GT or IPD brace?
Also I was vainly hoping for some relief from "rattly rack" syndrome--whereby the steering wheel has lot of vibration (enough to rattle) at 60 --65mph. the U joints on the rack look OK. But I can shift the wheel perceptibly when stationary and sometimes I feel the assembly (wheel and rack) move when driving.
I am out $400.00 (on a trusted indie mechanic) and I don't suspect he is at fault here, but I am a bit disappointed.
Your wisdom is greatly appreciated.
