RPM Sensor Replacement 200 1992

This morning I replaced the RPM Sensor on my 1992 240 wagon. For a while there I didn't think I was going to be able to get it done.

The RPM Sensor was replaced for two reasons. 1. I noticed that the insulation was coming off part of the wire. 2. Sometimes the wagon is hard to start on hot starts, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to get this sensor and wire harness replaced.

I placed a board across the top of the two strut towers and then placed a sheet of plywood on top of that and resting on the front of the engine compartment above the radiator. I then belly flopped on top of the engine to work on this job.

At first I tried to get a wrench or socket on the RPM sensor bolt from the exhaust manifold side of the engine. No luck. I then decided to drop the tranny some by unbolting the tranny support brace and lowering it a few inches.

I then was able to get a light on the side of the exhaust side of the engine and could see straight down in back of the engine and see the bolt on the sensor on top of the tranny housing. After a bunch of socket extensions and one flex joint, I was able to get the bolt un-done by going straight down from on top.

Once the bolt was out, the old sensor came out fine and easily. It was a little tricky getting the new sensor in the hole on top of the tranny housing, but it went ok with the help of a long screwdriver from the left side.

I put a piece of paper around the bolt head and put the bolt and paper in the 10 mm socket to help it stay in place for the install. Again a little difficult getting the bolt started, but went ok and was able to plug up the harness with no trouble.

Bolted the tranny brace back in place, gave the car a test drive and all seems good.

This job was difficult due to the lack of space between the back of the engine, the tranny housing, and the tranny tunnel. I need longer arms and a wrist that bends differently.

Hopefully I never need to do this job again, but if I do I at least have a game plan.

Best wishes and I hope that this might help someone else out that needs to do this job.
