power inverter for 1995 940 900

I just bought a 400 watt power inverter (12 volts to 120 v.) and I am wondering how best to install it for a trip. I could plug it into the lighter socket but I am wondering if there is a place on the fuse box I could just tap into. Or is there some other way? I would prefer not to run a seperate line to the battery - but I could. Also, will cause my car battery to not charge? I would think not but I am wondering about that. Is there an idiot light that flickers when the car battery is discharging? I expect to use it mainly when the car is running. Thanks.
