I got the 240 running!
The timing belt was NOT a task I was looking forward to doing on short notice. I asked many basic, newb questions, I know I did, thank you all for putting up with it. It took 6 hrs (including a total tune up and waiting on my wife to go get a 24mm socket for me too).
I learned so much today, for example, all instructions/manuals have it wrong, the 240 B230 is a NON INTERFERENCE engine, contrary to all instructions, you CAN turn the crank pully without the belt attached.
The rope thing, SH!T!! It frackin works! HAHAHA. I used 3/8 climbing rope (all i had handy) and stuffed about 42" of it in there, by using a 1/4 brass rod with a blunted point to feed it in (brass being softer than the surrounding materials, causing no damage). Its useless trying to put the belt on from the bottom up, best to go top down. I suggest using this method (as above)
Marking the various points to align, forget white out, i used some of my wife's bright pink nail polish. Higly visible, and it is essentially paint.
Again, thank you all so much for putting up with me in my frustration to get this done tonight.
This gives me the confidence to do more also.
I am not a total mechanical newb, really, I have just never got into the internal workings of engines until now, so had no use for the knowledge.
the '92 240 is running better than it has since *I* have owned it. I can't wait for my (round trip) 100 mile commute tomorrow.
