Tranny not engaging / slipping .............. 700 1991

1991 740 with 168,000 miles. AW70L tranny. ATF fluid changed aprox. 25,000 miles ago. Looks fine visually(dark reddish color). Problem which just started this week is that tranny starts slipping every few minutes or so. If I turn off car then it is okay for another few minutes then starts acting up again. Would is the problem and how can I fix it ?? Although as I have read here filter should not need cleaning or changing nonetheless could that be problem ? Torque converter ? I had this same problem a number of years ago with a volvo AW70L and ended up junking car. Lowest price I have gotten in this area(NJ shore)is $1100 to replace tranny with a used one. I only paid $600 for this car and could probably buy a similar used 740 for less then $1100 so I do not think replacing tranny makes sense. Please help. Thanks all.
