How do you turn crank counterclockwise to tighten with the Rope trick ? 900 2004

The rope trick worked great to loosen the crank bolt, but the directions say to turn the crank counterclockwise and re-insert the rope to tighten the crank bolt. I don't understand how to turn the crank counterclockwise when the bolt is aleady loose. It must be something simple but I am not seeing it.
