1988 240 dies every 50 miles or so on route to Denver from Kansas 200

could this be a fuel pump issue as the driver said first there was an unusual amount of pressure when the gas cap was removed and then once more gas was put in it ran again? ...maybe the out of tank fuel pump? Thanks, Kris
