V90 Shift Lever Button Stuck S90-V90

This morning the wife was leaving for work in her V90 (1998, 182k) and suddenly was going nowhere as the shift lever's button stayed pushed in after she pushed it in to move the lever from Park to Reverse. But even when stuck pushed in, the lever would not move out of Park.

Grrr . . .

I was envisioning having to crawl under the car to inspect the linkage or pull out the console or both to figure out what was going on, and told her that she could either call a cab or I'd give her a ride to work on the back of my bike. She hates riding on the back of my bike, but hates the idea of spending money on a cab even more. I think it's a control thing with her and my bike. I was pulling the bike out of the garage when she started shouting to me from within her car that she had gotten the lever to work.

Come to find out that she pushed DOWN on the shift lever and the button popped out, then began working normally again.

So, since this has never happened before, I'm wondering if perhaps there is some slop that has developed somewhere and if this is something we can look forward to occurring again. And the reason for this post is to find out exactly where I'll need to look in case I do need to tear into things in the future to repair a stuck button problem. Is this button operating a cable or a linkage arrangement, or . . . ?

TIA!
