Hi All,
I am a frequent lurker but first time poster. I have had my 1980 245DL since Dec 2010. All the information on these forums has been invaluable as I delve into the car. Hopefully, I'll have a chance to contribute in the event someone needs help. In the meantime I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer.
Background:
For about 3mos my speedo was bouncing at low speed and reading low. Classic signs of a dying cable. Then about 10days ago it the speedo failed completely. After disconnecting at speedo side I determined the inner cable was not spinning in the sheath. I got a new cable installed and routed it. It still didn't work.
So I pulled the speedo gear from the overdrive unit and found a big bit of swarf and the gear is chewed up. See pic. (Sorry about the size of the image. I'll resize before I post next time). The gear has 20teeth. Volvo also has a 18, and 19 tooth gear.
My questions:
1. Is this the correct gear (number of teeth)?
a. I know the speedo gear is related to the differential ratio. Without putting it up on jacks and measuring the number of pinion turns is there a good way to find out my axle ratio?
i. If I do put it up on jacks how can I tell the difference between 3.91 and 3.73 turns, for example?
2. Is there a good source for these speedometer gears? I would like to buy new. I called the Volvo dealer and he basically told me they cannot get them. I found them at a couple of websites for about $110/ea on 2-3wk back order. Money is less a concern for me than getting the correct part with good quality.
a. I would consider pulling one from the junkyard but I am concerned about going through the labor of finding the correct transmission, pulling it, only to find it has the wrong number of teeth and/or is already damaged.
My next step is clean up the old one, re-install it while I figure out the the correct gear and wait for it to arrive.
At the same time I will also flush the overdrive and replace the seals and filter. My concern is there is more swarf floating around the unit. I don't want to put in a $100 gear only to have it eaten again.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom.
Best regards,
PH
