AC Compressor - belt issue? 200 1989

Hi all, this is my first post here.

About a year ago, I bought an '89 240 wagon. I love it, but recently it's started making this really bad sound and smoking. I popped the hood and it looks like the AC belt is not moving with the AC compressor at times. Anyway, I take it in and the guy tells me I need to replace the AC compressor and that it'll cost me $1250.

I paid $2000 for the car total. Does this sound right? Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated.
