Mysterious D-Type OD Failure 1800

Hi Folks

The OD failed pretty dramatically in my 122 Estate a few weeks ago (I know, this is the 1800 forum but I thought I'd have better luck here). Lots of noises and smells. It had given great service but was a chronic leaker from every spot and that finally did it in. So no mystery there.

The mystery is that I put another one in (acquired with a parts car, looked freshly rebuilt) and it worked BEAUTIFULLY for about two weeks and then quit. No tragic noises. Just no OD. The solenoid clicks merrily with every switch flick in 4th. There's no relay so I know it's the solenoid that's clicking. I checked the solenoid adjustment before I put it in (remember this is a D-type with the little arm under the cover) and that looked very close. I didn't insert a drill bit and fine tune it but it looked damn close to perfect just eyeballing it. Fluid level is perfect.

Any ideas? Just how picky is that adjustment- could 2mm make the difference? What else should I try?

Many thanks in advance!

Jim
