Thanks for the tips so far--I did follow up on them all. BUT, the old girl still dies on every 1st Cold and now even warm starts with an accompanying poor/rough idle.
HERE'S WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR.
1. Installed a new single wire Oxygen Sensor. Sensor's signal is trying to tell the ECU we are too lean but the ECU is not responding properly.
2. Tried an exact used replacement ECU #0 280 000 500----NO CHANGE!! Crap and all the way from LA to here in Hartford,WI "Packer Country" and no score?
3. Swapped out the little BLACK BOX # 0 280 220 005 found just below the ECU----NO CHANGE
4. Sprayed water all over all Vacuum lines & Injectors while running--no change in RPMs at idle.
5. Flame trap system working well --good flow out of trap to intake--no leaks
6. Installed a new Fuel Pressure Regulator---plus partially clamped off the fuel return line to see if the pump could crank up the pressure---it did and the idle did smooth out. Nice test but not permanently left in place. Must be running lean just like the O2 Sensor was trying to tell the ECU. Getting close!!
7. LINK to see the REBIRTH & New Paint job on the Old 82 Brick bought from an 88 yr. old lady with only 71K. If you have sound, there's music with it. http://secure.smilebox.com/ecom/openTheBox?sendevent=4d6a59774e6a51774f4456384e5467784e7a49324e44413d0d0a&sb=1
8. Installed New Plugs & a New Fuel Filter and New Temp Sensor---nothing.
9. Removed and completely cleaned the Idle Motor (works well) and Intake Valve Body and Air Mass Meter>>carefully----Nothing Changed!!
10. REMOVED CONNECTOR FROM AIR MASS METER AND IT STARTED AND DID NOT DIE AND HAD A WONDERFUL IDLE. Could this be what needs fixing?
QUESTION??? I'm thinking I need a new AMM. Do I? The Part # on the one from my 82 is 0 280 212 002 and I have one from an 86 Part # 0 280 212 007. Can I give it a try or do I need an exact match?
Thanks for any suggestions or (if you have & will sell the old AMM I may need:)--- let me know!
