emission controls: air injection system question.
first, the car never had a catalytic converter (or was it removed?), it does have an egr, and what i believe are pieces of an air injection system...does that likely indicate it had a catalytic converter at one time? i.e. did all cars with emission controls have all three items in 1974? or did catalytic converters come in 1975? exhaust pipes are different from 1974 to 1975, there is a port on one side of the 1975 downpipes i think...o2 sensor?
in theory, it is an air injection manifold connected to the exhaust manifold, an air pump connected to the clean air side of the air filter and to a diverter valve and also to an anti-backfire flame trap. it mixes clean air with noxious fumes to be expelled in the exhaust. i don't see the air pump or the diverter valve, they were possibly removed from the car before i owned it or maybe i am just not seeing them. the flame trap seems to have been cut off and welded shut and the manifold has a hole in one of the outlet tubes (now welded closed). i have never seen any posts concerning this emission control equipment. i also can not find for sale any of these pieces. anyone? should i just remove the air injection manifold with attached (now defunct) flame trap and plug the holes in the exhaust manifold? has anyone done this?
if i am unable to remove the fittings attaching the air injection manifold to the main exhaust manifold, i could be in for a headache. i want to remove it since it had a hole in it and there could be other places that will form holes if not already. i have a new can of p-blaster ready but i think this job might involve some applied heat from a torch.
