Timing belt change 700

1992 740 non turbo.
In the Haynes manual it says to first align the crank at TDC on the marker and then undo the crank front bolt to remove the pulley, and do this without moving the crank, by way of jamming the starter ring.
Is this practically the best way ?
Also, is this engine "interference" if the belt breaks?
