258K Crankshaft oil seal leak. 700 1988

I was hoping to get my 740 wagon to 300K without major engine work but alas it appears as if that will not happen. I'm getting so much blow by that the front crankshaft oil seal leaks all over my wife's expensive brick driveway. "If momma aint happy etc." I have been offered a re-built engine for a total including installation and freight for some $3,500 including freight and installation. I would like to hear of any experiences with re-built engines and the purveyors of same. Or, does anyone have a surefire way of stopping a crankshaft oil seal leak.
I've tried the grey seal and wonder if I should revert to the reddish brown one.I've also tried moving the seal inboard away from what is a pretty deep groove in the shaft. Someone mentioned sleeves that fit over the nose and use a larger seal.
