My 1990 240 DL winter beater driven year round is making a blower motor death rattle. This car is old, formerly neglected, occasionally redneck engineered but surprisingly low mileage. In other words, it is having a lot of high-mileage failures at a relatively low 110K.

The noise of the blower is different than I am used to and only happens occasionally when cold. It is not the high-pitched scream I am of a dry bushing. It really is more of a rattle like an out-of-round fan is hitting the shroud. Is this still a dry bushing issue that MIGHT be solved with a little light machine oil on the shafts behind the impellers (very old thread) or should I just get out the dremel and prepare for Don Foster's chainsaw method but hope to make it through the winter?

As a side note, now that my brakes react so much better, I find myself driving this car like it was my '76 244 or 1980 BMW 320i... aggressive but not offensive. Lots of preserving momentum and getting into the throttle right after the apex. In short, having a ball. Makes me want to find a nicer '91+ wagon and do the full IPD treatment on the suspension to make it my long term car instead of letting the wife convince me into an early V70 or Late Saab 9-5 Sport-combi.
