A/C filler port placement location 200 1986

I was at the boneyard this past weekend and found an a/c filler port spliced into the the a/c hose that crosses over the valve cover. Got home and attached my 134a a/c connector that comes with the little cans of freon.....and it snapped onto it perfectly. Since my system has been converted to the 134a system and it's a real pain to get to the filler port buried on the back of the compressor, what's there to loose from tying this into that hose? I know I have to have the system evacuated and recharged, but it would make life so much easier. Thanks.
