Cubby by the shifter smaller in my 91 245 than my 89 244? 200 1991

I recently bought a 1991 245, and I noticed that the little cubby in front of the shifter is quite a bit smaller than the one in my 89 244. When I opened up the dash I saw that there's a computer or some kind of module attached to the back of it. So two questions, I guess:

1) What's that computer?

2) Can I fit the bigger cubby in there if I swap out the smaller one? Eyeballing it, it looks like there's enough space, and I have a spare bigger cubby.
